Hawaiian library supplies mobile shower van twice a month

Hawaiian library supplies mobile shower van twice a month

On October 25, officials at Kane‘ohe Regional Library on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, invited a Revive and Refresh mobile shower van to use its parking lot twice a month in an effort to help a growing number of its homeless library patrons take a shower. The library joined forces with the new outreach center and urgent care clinic next door. The Kane‘ohe Joint Outreach Center has been open just two months and already it’s provided medical care and social services to more than 80 people. “After they get a shower, they get a hot meal, and when they’re eating we try to connect them with the social services they need,” said state Rep. Lisa Kitagawa....

Reimagining the Public: Library Services to People in Jails and Prisons

Here's another FREE Webinar by the ODLOS (ALA ~ Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services)

Title: Reimagining the Public: Library Services to People in Jails and Prisons

When: Thursday, October 31 at 11 a.m. CST

Description: On any given day in America, more than 2 million people are detained in jails and prisons. This number does not include the many people who are on restrictive movement (through GPS monitoring), nor does in represent the impact of incarceration on the loved ones and communities of people who are incarcerated. Despite this, the impact of incarceration and the importance of library services to people who are incarcerated is often viewed as a form of specialized librarianship rather than an aspect of public library services. The webinar will cover a variety of service models and best practices that can be modified to fit the library contexts of webinar participants, and participants will leave with the tools needed to advocate for library services to people in jails and prisons as an aspect of increasing equity, diversity, and creating more inclusive library practices.

How to Talk About Race a FREE Webinar from the ODLOS (ALA ~ Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services)

Title: How to Talk About Race

When: Tuesday, October 29 at 1 p.m. CST

Description: Hosting book discussions and/or community conversations can be daunting when we are not equipped to manage certain aspects of a conversation. “How to talk about Race” is a brief but insightful introduction to moderating discussions relating to race. Conversations about race are deeply personal and can be polarizing; the content we have created serves as a guide to navigate these discussions while maintaining a respectful environment. The purpose of this webinar is to walk away with applicable tools to utilize in book discussions and community conversations, learn how to establish ground rules for a group discussion, understanding an identity wheel and its purpose, and develop strategies for disruptive participants.

PLA 2019 Inclusive Internship Initiative concludes

PLA 2019 Inclusive Internship Initiative concludes

Mary Hirsh writes: “This summer, 48 public libraries around the US hosted a high-school-aged intern for 10 weeks of learning, networking, and career development as part of PLA’s third annual Inclusive Internship Initiative.

The initiative is designed to introduce students from diverse backgrounds to librarianship as a viable and rewarding career. Members of the 2019 III cohort gathered in Washington, D.C., September 20–22 for a wrap-up event to discuss the work they did as well as the impact of that work on their careers, their libraries, and their communities.”...
