Librarian Part-Time – Pawtucket Public Library

The Pawtucket Public Library is looking for a part-time Librarian who has a strong service oriented philosophy to work in a busy public library that serves a multi-ethnic community. The Librarian will work in the Adult Services department answering reference questions and overseeing the Library’s digital services.

Minimum Requirements: A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution. Successful candidate must have knowledge of current technological applications for information access and ability to utilize these resources with a high degree of accuracy and proficiency. Library will consider graduate student who is within six months of graduation.

Salary Range: $31.03 -$33.60 per hour in three steps
Benefits: vacation, sick leave and city holidays
Hours: 19 hours per week, Monday and Wednesday 3 pm to 9 pm and alternate Friday/Saturday 9 am to 5 pm.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT IV – CIRCULATION SUPERVISOR

Library Assistant IV – Circulation Supervisor – South Windsor Public Library seeks a knowledgeable leader to coordinate all aspects of circulation services. The successful candidate will be responsible for training and leading staff ranging from volunteers and students to adult circulation workers in the Adult and Children’s/YA areas; will work directly with patrons at our busy circulation desk; will handle complex circulation problems and ongoing updating of policies and procedures; will actively represent the Library in professional and community settings. The Circulation Supervisor must demonstrate comprehensive planning skills and an ability to treat co-workers and the public with empathy.

Full-time schedule (35 hours/week) includes evenings and Saturdays year-round. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ experience working in a public library circulation department. MLS students and L.T.A.s with significant related experience will be considered. Experience with Sierra ILS preferred; excellent customer service skills a must. $53,190 minimum to start with full municipal benefits package.

Essays Sought for 2023 Miriam Braverman Memorial Prize

Submissions are being accepted for the 2023 Miriam Braverman Memorial Prize.  This prize is awarded annually by the Progressive Librarians Guild for the best library / information science graduate student essay about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries, or librarianship.  Papers related to archivists, archives, and archival work are also eligible.

Illustrating Voices of Power and Resistance in "Tien Fu Wu Freedom Warrior"

Local artist Dawn Wing will read from her non-fiction graphic narrative Tien Fu Wu: Freedom Warrior and discuss the research and process of creating it. Tien Fu Wu was a survivor of human trafficking who became a community advocate and translator for justice during the Chinese Exclusion Act era in the early 20th century.

The first 20 attendees to register and opt-in with their address will receive the book Tien Fu Wu: Freedom Warrior by mail.

Dawn K. Wing is a Chinese American multi-disciplinary artist/librarian. She earned her B.A. in Studio Arts and Art History at Wellesley College, and MLIS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dawn is now an Associate Professor in Library and Information Services at Metro State University.

RUSA’s Achievement Awards and Grants Committee continues to seek nominations for three awards and applications for two grants (see descriptions below). If you know of an individual or library that has made a significant contribution to reference or library services for adults, please consider nominating them for one or more of the awards. And if you have a proposal for a new service or program to support individuals living with dementia or an idea for a research project to better connect people to resources, information services, or collections, please consider applying for one of the grants.

Library of Congress: Librarians-in-Residence

Start your career as a Librarian-in-Residence (LIR) at the world's largest library and the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation, the Library of Congress! 

The Librarians-in-Residence program will give early-career librarians the opportunity to gain meaningful work experience alongside esteemed library professionals while benefiting from on-the-job training and mentorship. Selectees will be offered an initial six-month, temporary appointment at the GS-9 pay level. The program is open to students who have earned or will complete their master’s degree at an American Library Association-accredited program between December 1, 2021 and June 30, 2023. 

 

Students are invited to join us at one of two information sessions to learn details and benefits of the program, get insights on how to apply and hear directly from an LIR participant about their experience.

REFORMA Scholarships

Applications are now being accepted for the REFORMA Scholarship.

Applications will be accepted beginning January 1, 2023. The deadline for submission of the REFORMA Scholarship is midnight, March 15, 2023. The scholarship will apply to this coming academic school year, Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters.

Since 1971, REFORMA has supported the active recruitment of bilingual and bicultural librarians to meet the information needs of the Spanish-speaking community. The REFORMA Scholarship provides financial assistance to encourage and enable Latinos and/or Spanish speakers to pursue or advance a career in Library and Information Science.

Please encourage individuals currently enrolled or planning to attend an ALA-accredited library school to apply. The maximum amount awarded will be $1500. But, the number of scholarships and amount awarded varies from year to year.
