General Membership Meeting (June 2017)

Cornucopia of Rhode Island: A Library Community of Color
General Membership Meeting
Saturday, June 24th at 10:00 A.M.
Naval War College, Library
686 Cushing Road
Newport, RI
Thanks to Gina Brown for hosting.

Please note the following:

Visitors

Whether you’re coming to the NWC campus to participate in an evening lecture or you are interested in visiting the Navy’s “Home of Thought,” we look forward to having you aboard. We want your visit to go smoothly but please remember the campus is part of a secure Naval facility. Only students, staff, faculty and other approved visitors are permitted to enter the base and then drive onto campus.

https://www.usnwc.edu/About/Directions.aspx
Therefore CORI must get clearance to visit.
Please contact Gina with the following information if you wish to attend the meeting or have any questions regarding security clearance.  Per Gina:

“I just received the protocol for groups of visitors on a weekend. I will need each person’s Name, Date of Birth, and SSN.  Their information will be input on a classified document that goes to Naval War College security, on to Norfolk VA for Big Navy security checks and then bounces back to Newport with a yay or nay.  The whole process takes two weeks, so the sooner we can gather everyone's info the better. “

Please contact Gina at:
Email: Browng@usnwc.edu and telephone number 401.841.6500

Next Meeting on Thursday, January 17th

Just a reminder that the next meeting of Cornucopia of Rhode Island will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013, 6:00 P.M. at Hibachi & Grille Supreme Buffet, 1245 Bald Hill Road, Warwick, RI. The meeting is open to all and we will have a Yankee Swap. For those of you not familiar with a Yankee Swap, simply bring a small, inexpensive wrapped gift to the dinner. It can be a serious gift, or a silly one! All the gifts are placed in one pile and one by one each person chooses something and if they don't want it, they get to "swap" with someone else for whatever it is they received. The dinner will be separate checks, so if you wish, you can bring a guest with you.

2012 CORI Annual Potluck Luncheon/Meeting‏

I'm sending out this reminder to all members, and former members, of Cornucopia. Coming up this Saturday, September 22nd, 2012, will be our annual potluck luncheon/meeting.  The event will take place at the Jamestown Public Library from 10:00am until 2pm.  This year Dr. William Simmons of Brown University will be the guest speaker.  He will be presenting a talk on the Native American artifacts stored in the Jamestown Library.

Dr. Simmons graduated from Brown University in Human Biology in 1960, and earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology at Harvard University in 1967. From 1967 till 1998 he was a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley, where he was Department Chair, Director of the Center for the Teaching and Study of American Cultures, and Dean of the Division of Social Sciences. In 1998 he moved to Brown University as Executive Vice President and Provost, and is currently Chair of Anthropology. He currently serves on the boards of the Providence Public Library, the Rhode Island Historical Society, and the Providence Branch of the NAACP.  He has written many books on Native American culture, including "The Ancient Graves of Conanicut Island" and " The Narragansett" part of the series of "North American Indians".  He is very familair with the artifacts stored at the Jamestwon Library and I hope that you will be able to attend this year's meeting to connect again with CORI and to hear Dr. Simmons speak.

This will also be an opportunity for you to renew your membership in CORI.  As in the past, dues remain at $20.00 per year.  The dues that are collected support CORI's endeavors to present seminars, and to continue to spread the universal message of diversity.  With the collection of dues, and your presence at meetings, these events are possible.  We would really like to see past members, and new members, attend our upcoming meetings so that CORI may continue the presentations and seminars that have been well attended.

Attached is a dues form, if you cannot make Saturday's potluck.  Please contact me, kathy747@verizon.net or any of our other officers, Ida Mcghee, Secretary,imcghee2003@yahoo.com, Donna Gilton, Vice-president,dgilton@uri.edu; or MaryElizabeth Berry, President, melizabeth7428@gmail.com if you have any further questions.

We hope to see you Saturday, and until then enjoy the beautiful fall weather we are having!

Regards,

Kathy Hannuksela, Treasurer
Cornucopia of Rhode Island

P.S.Check out our webpage at Cornucopia of Rhode Island.  Maria Cotto, CORI webmaster, has done a truly exceptional job of putting together a site that is both interesting and informative.
